Sixteen years after the last jam, Camp Rock is back. Disney Channel aired Camp Rock 3 first on August 13 and released it online on Disney+ the next day with the Jonas brothers and the newest camp-ers in the camp while remaining mindful of both reinventing the band and coming across enough likeable to overcome over-familiarity. The story began with Connect 3, a fictional band still a played by the Jo N -Nick and Kevin-. When their last-minute replacement on an upcoming national reunion tour suddenly drops out, they go back to the camp that once made them into performers and have the current campers hold an audition to find the replacement. Though, the newest addition to the storyline that resonates deepest with fans is the reappearance of the brothers who are once again Shane, Nate, and Jason Gray.
The brothers are also listed as executive producers with Demi Lovato, who was the star of the original films as wannabe singer-songwriter Mitchie Torres; she shows up in a surprise appearance in the present installmenta glimpse that has been identified as one of the most eagerly scrutinized aspects of the production. Maria Canals-Barrera is present as well in the same character, Connie Torres, who now helms the camp in the present installment, allowing for a snug link to the past. At the same time, the film makes it clear its more than a return to Camp Rock’s world.
In place of the present campers are a new group of younger characters fighting for a chance to be part of Connect 3 on the road. Newcomers Liamani Segura, Malachi Barton, Hudson Stone, and Lumi Pollack bring contemporary attitude, aspiration, and musical presence.
These characters struggle with the same mix of friendship competition insecurities, and adrenaline rushes as the old camp denizens, but the form is adjusted to fit the concerns and expectations of today’s middle schoolers. Director Veronica Rodriguez has explained the balancing act. The film had to hit the mark with the millennials who, having grown up with the original films, would be nostalgic for some of their motifs, while also being engaging for a new Disney crowd experiencing the Saga for the first time. That balancing act is evident throughout the film, from how music, characters and tone are handled to the visual style. There’s plenty of the familiar, while the competition and contemporary touring band give it the edge of something new.
Initial impressions from those who participated confirmed that the reunion was natural once the cameras started rolling. As reports, the cast, including original stars of the show, commented that it was almost as if they had never left when shooting with the new cast. As for the Jonas Brothers, return to their old roles has provided an opportunity for them to reconnect with the younger audience they have grown with, while acknowledging the time that has past. For the new cast, reentering a familiar franchise has given them the opportunity to live up to expectations but also forge their own name.
